1st. The lens on his camera is not flat, it is curved, so it bends the light (the image) into the center where the receptors are for greater clarity and more possible distance focus. Because of this, when things are not in focus, we get a fuzzier and fuzzier image that gets dominated by what is in focus. So, the image of the bottle cap--as it gets further out of focus--begins to get dominated by the tabletop, which is in focus. And, when you adjust the focus to the bottle cap, we see it clearly again, and all of it. 2nd. The sailboat was not very far away, not far enough to go 'hull-down'--so when you focus up on it, the image gains clarity, and you see it all again. If it had been far enough away to be 'hull-down' (these are nautical terms used for hundreds of years), no amount of focus would have shown the hull of the boat, as seen in the image I posted on the other thread. 3rd The sun WAS making an arc. And where it arcs in the sky changes depending where on the globe you are and what season it is. It can go directly overhead going E to W, while near the poles away from the sun w/ axil tilt, like Alaska, there are three months of the year when it never sets, it just goes around near the horizon--which is what you would expect being on a globe. And it starts with each of us.
